DAVID ALFORD


Writer/Actor/Director/Producer David Alford is the Director of Drama Programs at Martin Methodist College. A native and resident of Adams, Tennessee, he attended Martin and Austin Peay State University (B.S) before attending the Juilliard School for Drama at Lincoln Center in New York City, where he was awarded the Saint-Denis Prize upon graduation in 1991. In 1994 he was awarded a Fox Fellowship for the foundation of Mockingbird Theatre in Nashville, a professional non-profit company that he served as Artistic Director until 2004. He was the recipient of the 1996 Ingram Fellowship for Acting through the Tennessee Arts Commission. From 2004-2007 he was Executive Artistic Director of Tennessee Repertory Theatre in Nashville, the state's largest professional theatre company, and in 2007-08 became the Rep's first Artist-in-Residence.

David has worked as an artist and teacher with numerous organizations, including the Nashville Shakespeare Festival, Nashville Children's Theatre, the Tennessee Shakespeare Festival, Arkansas Shakespeare Festival, Martin Methodist College, Vanderbilt University, Shorter College, and Austin Peay.

David has appeared in over fifty professional theatre productions. Recent stage credits include Roma in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS (Tennessee Rep), Prospero in THE TEMPEST (Arkansas Shakespeare, which he also directed), and the Nurse in ROMEO AND JULIET (Tennessee Shakespeare). Screen credits include THE SECOND CHANCE (Sony Pictures), THE LAST CASTLE (Dreamworks), and A DEATH IN THE FAMILY (PBS/Masterpiece Theatre) among numerous other independent film projects and commercials.

Original stage plays produced include SPIRIT: THE AUTHENTIC STORY OF THE BELL WITCH OF TENNESSEE, GHOSTLIGHT (produced by Mockingbird Theatre, 2003), and a stage adaptation of Alan Lightman's EINSTEIN'S DREAMS (produced by Peoples Branch Theatre, 2001). Produced screenplays include ON MUSIC ROW (for CMT, winner, Nashville Independent Film Festival), PRISONER (2004, finalist in HBO's Project Greenlight competition), and ADRENALINE (Amylase Independent, 2005), a full-length films shot in one continuous unbroken take, in which he also starred.

He has directed numerous theatre projects, including the abovementioned SPIRIT and EINSTEIN'S DREAMS. Recent directing credits for Tennessee Rep include RABBIT HOLE, THE SANTALAND DIARIES, INHERIT THE WIND, and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, among others. Film directing credits include the abovementioned independent film PRISONER.

Mr. Alford recently completed work on his first musical, SMOKE, concerning the events of the Tobacco Wars in Montgomery County and northern middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky in the early 1900s, and is set to direct the project, slated to premiere in his home town of Adams in June of this year.
